“Ota Brought Ifa Divination To Oyo In the 16th Century”, Alafin Of Oyo, HRM Oba Lamidi Adeyemi

The Alafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi has once again added a voice to the history of Ota and Aworis by saying that they brought the Ifa divination to Oyo Empire over 400years ago.

He said this through his Cultural Ambassador, Dr. Paula Gomes who represented him alongside one of the daughters of the Monarch, Princess Folashade Adeyemi.

Dr. Paula Gomes in her three messages brought from the Alaafin of Oyo and relaying only two of it, said that Egungun is the most ancient practice of the Yorubas which originated from Nupe but widely practiced in Oyo. She added that the practice of Egungun concerns all families in Yoruba land. Also she said that Egungun has no English translation as against the erroneous believe that Egungun is a masquerade.  Further expatiating, she said Egungun is a spiritual being which is connected to the ancestors of each family in Yoruba land.

In her second message, Dr. Paula said that the Orisa worshipers in Ota through the Alado-Ikoyi of Ado-Awaye way back in the 16th century brought Ifa divination to Oyo empire. Furthermore, the Alado-Ikoyi of Ado-Awaye through the Alafin Orunmila brought Ifa divination to Oyo and the Alafin Orunmila of Oyo officially accepted Ifa divination in the Oyo Empire and extended it to the whole Yoruba land. She enjoined the royal fathers and traditional worshipers not to be discouraged as the culture and tradition are the only DNA which connects them with their ancestors.

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, in his goodwill message, blessed the people of Awori land and most particularly, lauded the effort of Hon. Dayo Arogunmola for the initiative.  HRH Oba Dr. Aderemi Adeniyi Adedapo, The Alayemore Olojudo of Ido Odun who represented the Ooni of Ife at the event encouraged the people of Awori not to be disparaged in that they are the original owners of Lagos and its suburbs because they are the true descendants of Olofin Ogunfunminire.

A renowned Awori born international artiste, Jelili Atiku condemned the attitude of Egungun begging for money. He emphasized that he has traveled far and wide and our own culture remain the most sorted after inmost part of the world. He further charged the handlers of the event not to go to sleep as they have set precedence in the history of the Aworis.

The facilitator of the event, Hon. Dayo Arogunmola stated that the foundation is set out to bring about appreciation of the practical Yoruba tradition through unification of all the Egunguns from different parts of Yoruba kingdom. He also stressed that the program is meant to ensure the preservation of standards in the Yoruba Egungun cultural heritage as it is one of the festivals that unites the Yorubas from different communities regardless of religious affiliations through singing, dancing and colorful costume of the Ara-Oruns.

History has it that Ado Awaye was founded by people from Ado-Odo.
So, is this historical fact not relating to Ado-Odo than Ota?

ADO AWAYE IN FOCUS …Wale Alagbe .
The compound name suggests two distinct communities coming together from their age long natural abodes on the hills to establish Ado Awaye in 1860s.Today installation by the Alafin of Oyo,Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, marks the end of 34 year interregnum in the ferocious struggles over the traditional stool of Alado of Ado Awaye community.Prof.Akande, a Political Scientist at the Igbinedion University, who wrote on the tourist potentials of Ado Awaye, also established that Ado community migrated from Ado Odo to the place on the plank of War crisis to join the Awaye people as foremost settlers.Well this claim cannot be debunked for now and/or corroborated as well. The nexus between Ado Odo and Ado Awaye is a big plus to Ado Odo as to the origin of Ifa in Yoruba convention and tradition..Contrary to Prof Wande Abimbola’s claim that he was not sure of which of the three Ados Ado Ife(Ado Odo),Ado Ekiti and Ado Awaye could lay claim to be the origin of Ifa in Yoruba mythology. The Intelligence Report on the Badagry District in the I940s.clearly stated that Ifa roots lies in Ado of the Badagry District since its inception. Those with superior arguments and notorious facts may wish to throw or shed light on the subject.See the relic list of Alado copied from the Ado Awaye Youth cum Aroba Baba Itan platforms in the town.
